Campaign Messaging: Four Rules That Always Lead to Wins
As campaign season ramps up, I’ve been thinking about what makes political messaging stick. The truth is, the best campaigns aren’t the ones that say the most—they’re the ones that say the right things, with clarity and heart.
Whether you’re on the trail or behind the scenes, these are a few timeless truths I always come back to.
1. Know the End Game
Before you say a single word, ask yourself: What do I want people to do with this message? Are you trying to earn votes, start a conversation, or draw a clear contrast with your opponent? If you don’t know the outcome you’re aiming for, your message will drift—and so will your campaign.
2. Know the One Thing Your Voters Care About Most
Your voters aren’t glued to every press conference. They’re living their lives. So when they do tune in, you need to meet them where they are. Not with what you think is important. Not with what polls well. But what keeps them up at night? Zero in on that one core issue and make it your guiding star.
3. Stay on Message
This cannot be overstated. Stay. On. Message. Campaigns are marathons—and the message only starts to stick when you’ve repeated it so often you’re sick of hearing it. That’s when voters are finally starting to absorb it.
4. Show Humanity
People don’t vote for platforms—they vote for people. So yes, talk policy. But do it with empathy, honesty, and a bit of vulnerability. Share a laugh. Tell a story. Explain why you care. Voters want to see the person behind the podium—not just the bullet points.
In a world full of noise, clarity is power. Say less—but mean it more.
